What is a tax credit?
A tax credit is rebate system operated by the government whereby a certain percentage of your solar system cost can be offset against your IRS taxes the year after. It’s ‘dollar-for-dollar’, so if you have a rebate of $1000 and owe $5000, you only pay $4000.
Example: In 2021 the rebate is 26%. If a residential solar electric PV system costs $20000 the the tax rebate would be:
20000 x 26% = $5200 rebate against federal taxes
A solar PV system must be installed before December 31, 2019, to claim a 30% credit in force at that time. It decreased to 26% for systems installed in 2020 through 2021, and to 22% for systems installed in beginning 2022.
The tax credit expires starting in 2024 unless Congress renews it, which is likely given President Biden‘s commitment to renewables in the long term. There is no maximum amount that can be claimed.

How much does just a solar panel cost?
The cost of an individual solar panel varies according to its power rating in watts, which reflects its efficiency, and quality of manufacture.
It’s obvious that a 100 watt panel will cost much less than a 300 watt module, but there can also be a big difference between the cost of almost identical modules from different manufacturers.
In the past I have purchased 100 watt flexible panels from Alibaba with no brand name and I’ve regretted it. It quickly became obvious that the quality of manufacture was low and they wouldn’t last as long as a brand name, such as Renogy.
